| AKG K701 Retails for about 500-600. I got mine more then a year ago. THe only problem is the cable on one side broke off from the driver, had to send it in for repair twice for that problem. They dont sound good out of unamp source though. |

| comparison... i d say the main competitors for the k701 are the beyerdynamics dt880 and sennheiser hd-650. there is pretty much a consensus that they are all top notch piece of gear in the 300-500$ range. i have the k-701 and heard the h650 and they are easily worth their price tag if you have the system to go with it. i also heard good things about the dt880. it s pretty much a question of what "sound" you prefer. i d say that the k701 sound is really true-to-life and gives a better definition of space than the hd-650 which is known for it s grooving bass. i d say if you like jazz a lot definitely go for the hd-650 otherwise the k701 are better with the rest (to me). ultimately what makes me like the k701 is the quality of the midrange. so good. i heard the dt880 where good for vocals and had a nice treble. whatever you buy, i think you cant go wrong. just keep in mind that this kind of gears is not for children, it s potential to get better with a better amp and source is almost endless. if you run them out of your audio card, it will sound good dont worry, you ll get what you pay for. but pair them with good equipment and you ll be rewarded accordingly. |

| no it doesnt. but it will benefit greatly from one. one could spend thousands on an headphone amp and it will be worth it, provided you have a good source. the k701 are reference grade. if you want more info go to www.head-fi.org(reference on the web for headphones) |
